The Cable Hauling Safe Work Method Statement is a comprehensive procedure outlining the safety steps for the hauling of cable.

The Cable Hauling SWMS is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall WHS System.

This SWMS provides guidance on cable hauling. This SWMS covers the planning, preparation and operation involved with hauling cable adjacent to roads and, working in a pit or manhole.

Work carried out near or in a Confined Space is defined as a High Risk Activity under s291 of the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011. This SWMS does not cover working in or near a confined space. A dedicated SWMS addressing confined spaces and confined space rescue must be put in place if applicable and used in conjunction with this SWMS.

The Cable Hauling SWMS can be used as part of your WHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications

Hauling cable:

  • Always maintain one operator at cable drum and one operator at receiving location to manage feed rates
  • When feeding-in do not let cable slide through hands. Use a hand-over-hand technique and wear appropriate gloves.
  • Avoid sudden movements - take up slack slowly and in a controlled manner
  • Maintain even tension and avoid starting and stopping where possible
  • Avoid pinch points. Keep hands and other body parts away from cable guides and winches
  • Ensure gloves are worn when feeding and pulling cable
  • Maintain communication by radio or phone at all times with cable feeding and receiving personnel
  • Alternate task with other team members if manually pulling cable to avoid strain and/or heat exhaustion
  • If signs of heat fatigue obvious leave pit immediately and seek water and shade.
