Worker in critical condition after suffering from electric shock

A 47-year old worker is in a critical condition after suffering from electric shock while setting up speakers at Buninyong.

According to The Courier, the victim was putting speakers to a tree before 12pm on Friday, when one of the cables came into contact with an overhead power line.

Ballarat Police said that he was standing on top of a van when a co-worker threw him a cable which accidentally struck the power line.

The victim was brought to Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital before being airlifted to The Alfred Hospital.

A paramedic said that the victim went into cardiac arrest and was revived for more than 30 minutes. The victim’s workmates and a cyclist performed CPR before emergency services arrived.

WorkSafe is conducting an investigation over the incident.

NSW: Coroner Testifies on Worker’s Death

The coroner has stated in an inquiry that an working near powerlines in southern NSW.

The inquiry heard the 53-year-old man was found near live powerlines at a Mulwala factory in December 2008 just before collapsing.

He was taken to a hospital, but he died days after the incident.

The court was told the man was treated for symptoms consistent with electric shock. However, a pathologist did not find any “objective evidence” that the man was electrocuted.

TAS: Broadband Installation Hits a Snag

The Federal Government’s National Broadband Network (NBN Co.) is responsible for installing the new high-speed network as a nation building project.

NBN Co. head Mike Quigley has confirmed the accident, which took place in March while workers were rolling out fibre optic cables.

“I think it was related to an insulator on a pole,” he said.

Work in the project had to be suspended for over a week. Hundreds of workers are now undergoing induction on workplace safety.

“Any doubts [about safety], we stop,” Mr Quigley said.

“[The Government] didn’t need to tell us. I know how important this is.”

VIC: Factory Worker Dies in Melbourne

WorkSafe is looking into the death of a worker in a factory in Melbourne on Friday.

The 26-year-old Wantirna resident was working on a machine at CRP Industries in Bayswater at the time of his death.

According to WorkSafe spokesman Michael Birt, they are determining whether the man died of electric shock.

He was believed to be lifting a guard on an electric press making rubber gaskets when he was electrocuted.
