Band Saw Safety Notes

General Band Saw Safety

Band saws vary in size and in use. They may be fitted with feed rollers for large work.

If timber falls while being fed through the saw NO attempt must be made to retrieve it until the saw has been turned off.

Before Using Band Saws

Check the following:

  • Extraction system is in operation and functioning correctly.
  • Saw blade is free from visible damage – Example – broken teeth.
  • Saw blade lubricating reservoir to ensure that it is full.
  • Set the timber guide to the correct size and lock off.
  • Adjust fixed guards and self adjusting guards as required.
  • Check the operation of any self adjusting guards. They should move up as the timber moves through the saw.

Band Saw Maintenance

  • Inform operators that the saw will be taken out of service.
  • Ensure that the saw has stopped.
  • Isolate and lock out the power to the saw.
Note - Warnings signs are NOT adequate insurance of safety.

Routine maintenance should include checks of interlock guards – mechanical and electrical.
Example – Operation of cut off switches which shut off power to the saw to prevent operation if a guard is open
