The Safety Harness Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive document outlining the safety steps for the use of a safety harness. This SWMS covers the selection, inspection, fitting and use of a safety harness system for fall arrest.
Ensure an emergency response plan is developed, implemented and rehearsed for each site where persons are using a harness. The plan should ensure rescue of any fallen person wearing a harness is done within 5 minutes of fall. A person left for 15 minutes or more can die from suspension trauma.
Remember: The content of the SWMS should be refined over time and include consultation with workers and other persons conducting a business or undertaking. Prior to each new activity, the SWMS must be reviewed and revised to ensure it applies to the high risk construction work and the actual site you are working at.
