Heat Stress Safe Work Method Statement:

This Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive procedure outlining the safety steps for Working in the Heat.

The Heat Stress procedure is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details including your ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand.

It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System. The Heat Stress SWMS can be used as part of your OHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications.

Employees can suffer illness from working in excessively hot environments (such as foundries, iron works etc). Heat is not based on air temperature alone, heat sources can come from high temperatures, radiant heat, high humidity, hot objects, or strenuous physical activity.

Heat stress illness can include:

  • fainting
  • heat stroke
  • fatigue/exhaustion
  • rashes (such as prickly heat) or heat cramps
  • worsening of pre-existing medical conditions

Heat Stress Risk Assessment Notes

Conduct an assessment to determine whether workers will be exposed to heat stress. Take the following into account

  • air temperature
  • humidity
  • radiant heat (sun, furnaces etc)
  • air movement/wind speed
  • workload (nature and duration)
  • physical capability of worker (acclimatisation, weight, fitness level, medications, existing medical conditions)

This free product was a good one for our clients as it is something that they can develop into their own document without it appearing that we are pushing our company OHS onto them thus allowing them to manage their employees better when hot weather strikes.

Very informative and helpful in an area that directly affects my business, a small fabrication workshop that regulary sees temperatures above 35 degrees in summer.
