The Ladders Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive procedure outlining the safety steps for use of Portable Ladders.
The major risk with using ladders is falling either from overreaching or the ladder slipping. If the work cannot be performed safely then alternate means should be considered such as mobile or fixed scaffolding, trestles or elevating work platforms “cherry pickers”.
A step ladder should never be 'walked' by the person standing on the ladder. Wooden ladders should never be painted as this will prevent visual inspections to detect deterioration or defects.
The Ladders procedure is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System.
The Ladders Work Method Statement can be used as part of your OHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications.
Preparation
Ladders must be erected on a firm and stable surface.
Wet grass with soft soil beneath it, or a makeshift support under one side is not acceptable.
Ladders must be secured against movement at or near its top or bottom. Example – Being held, tied or clamped to a stable surface.
Stepladders should only be used in the fully open position.
