The Portable Toilet Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive procedure outlining the safety steps for the cleaning and transportation of portable toilets.

The Portable Toilet Work Method Statement (WMS) is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall WHS System.

This SWMS covers cleaning, pump-out of portable toilets and addition of cleaning/deodorising chemicals to the toilet tank. This also deals the general hazards associated with loading/unloading and transfer of portable toilets using a truck-mounted crane. Ensure site/task-specific SWMS are developed for hazards not covered in this SWMS.

Main hazards include:

Operation: (extract only)

Toilet / Unit cleaning:

Conduct cleaning tasks as per site-specific SWMS. Operate equipment as per manufacturer’s instructions

Examples:

  • Wear PPE as required.
  • Open lid/cover using correct tools. Do not lean over tank or place face in towards the tank after lid/cover removal.
  • Place hose into tank. Remove contents as required. Continue process as needed.
  • Inspect entire hose regularly during cleaning process to ensure good seal. Check bonding integrity regularly throughout work.
  • When tank is empty, clean /deodorise as required. Use chemicals as per SDS and manufacturer’s instructions.

Note: Septene Odour Fresh is a hazardous substance (poison and irritant) and also a flammable liquid. Ensure no smoking and correct PPE worn (properly-fitted organic vapour respirator, half-face, chemical goggles, long sleeves/pants, enclosed footwear, impervious gloves etc). Wash hands after use.
