Power Tools Information:

The Power Tools Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 12 page procedure outlining the steps for safely drilling samples.

This SWMS covers general safety issues concerned with the operation of hand held power tools. It does not cover use of Power Actuated/Explosive Tools (PAT) or a specific item of plant.

The Power Tools procedure is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System.

The Power Tools Work Method Statement can be used as part of your OHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications.

Planning

Consult with employees to identify hazards/risk with plant in operation.

Ensure:

• Safe operating Procedures are available
• Manufacturer’s instructions/manual available.
• All persons trained in use of particular tool
• Purchasing procedure developed to ensure any risks with new tools are reduced as far as reasonable.
• Note: This is particularly important for purchase of second hand tools.

Ensure tool suitable for task:

• Suited to the material. Eg: steel, wood, MDF, plastic
• Not too powerful for task. Eg: don’t use larger angle grinder than needed
• Sufficient power for task – excessive force not required.
