Common shielding gases (inert) include Argon and in some cases helium which are used for aluminum and non-ferrous materials. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is also commonly used for welding steel. These gases can displace oxygen in the worker's breathing zone and lead to injury and in extreme cases – fatality. It is vital that sufficient ventilation is provided (particularly as most MIG welding occurs indoors to ensure shielding gas function) not just for controlling inert gas dangers, but also for contaminants that may be present in the welding plume
