Ensure equipment suitable for task – (know the limitations of equipment –gradients, type of soil/compaction, SWL)

Ensure communication equipment available (check for mobile phone service in remote areas).

Ensure power tools suitable for task:

• Suited to the material/soil type
• Not too powerful for task. Eg: don't use larger angle grinder than needed. Sufficient power for task – no excessive force

Ensure:

• Rings, bracelets, watches etc are removed.
• Long hair is tied back
• No loose clothing or loose gloves are worn

Inspect intended work area. Check:

• Underground services/utilities (Dial before you dig)
• Type of soil (wet, dry, compact etc)
• Rocks, tree roots etc.
• Weather conditions, lighting
• Cliffs, pits, drop-offs, newly excavated soil, trenches
• Sufficient room so operator will not be knocked or need to over-reach
• Area clear of debris, cut-offs etc
• Work pieces are able to be secured and stable
