Operation: (extract only)

  • Replace /install spikes.
  • Use spike driver as per manufacturer's instructions. Example:
    • Wear appropriate PPE (safety boots, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves)
    • Operator physically able to handle weight and forces of unit during operation
    • Ensure no loose clothing
    • Establish exclusion zone as required. Remove non-essential persons from area
    • Ensure tool clear of dirt, debris, grease
    • Position tool over required area
    • Ensure firm footing, feet shoulder width apart
    • Firm grip with both hands
    • Depress trigger to release spike
  • Clear area of ground workers, replace ballast using excavator with correct (paddle) attachment
  • Ensure timbers are bought up tight base of rail and tamped. Bring ballast up and ensure tamped to keep timber tight.
  • Ensure sufficient ballast bed - compacted, sufficient distance on each side of rail foot (example: 300mm)
  • For tamping tasks using excavator:
    • Clear persons. Establish exclusion zone
    • Ensure operator has full view of work site
    • Works to cease if persons approach exclusion zone
    • Ensure operator familiar with tamping head operations
  • Seek advice from relevant works authority for disposal of waste and reclamation procedures for any steel materials.
