Preparation:
Chainsaw:
Should be used to cut blocks to length, usually about 40-50 cm long.
Either end of cut blocks should be as level and flat as possible.
Ensure that one block remains in good condition to use as a base block.
Base block should:
- Have a larger diameter than the wood to be placed on top and split.
- Be placed on firm ground
Knots:
When cutting wood for splitting, cut the large knots out of the tree trunks and limbs. Don't waste time trying to split them.
Note: Logs should not be split directly on the ground.
Reasons: Each blow will weaken the ground making the log to be split unstable and the worker will be forced to bend low during the swing, which causes back fatigue.

Block Splitter Information:
The Block Splitter Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 8 page procedure. A block splitter, sometimes known as a splitting axe, has a wedge-shaped blade to split logs and wood longitudinally.
The extra weight in the head of the splitter combined with the angle of the wedge means that it is less likely to become stuck in the wood compared with an axe.
This Safe Work Procedure does NOT relate to hydraulic splitters.
The Block Splitter procedure is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System.
