Preparation:
Ensure location is suitable for generator.
- Outside or in extremely well ventilated areas with no low-lying zones that would allow carbon monoxide to build up, Obtain Carbon Monoxide alarms where required.
- Protected from wet weather - canopy
- Clearance of at least 600mm (or as per manufacturer's recommendations) on all sides of generator to allow sufficient ventilation for cooling vents
- Flat, level ground
- At least 6m from flammable storages
- Clear of ignition sources
- Clear of air-intakes, windows or other areas where exhaust can enter indoors or confined spaces
- Fire protection equipment easily accessible to area
- Close to work area - leads are not placed out of sight, on metal structures, or in areas where they could be run over, pose tripping hazards or be damaged.
Note: Ignition sources include pilot lights, stoves, heaters, cigarettes, matches/lighters, grinding, welding, power points, lighting, light switches, radio transmitters, mobile phones, battery powered forklifts etc.
Ensure all devices/appliances are suitable to use with generator.
- Dry (if appliances have been wet - allow to dry and ensure tested by licensed electrician before use)
- Correct wattage for generator
Ensure operating manual is available onsite. Ensure all operators are aware of how to shut-down unit in an emergency. |
