General LPG Safety Information:
The Working with LPG (Liquid Propane Gas) Safe Work Procedure is a four page Safety Procedure for working in areas where LPG is being handled, stored and transported.
LPG Safety Notes:
- LPG (propane or butane) is a colourless liquid which readily evaporates into a gas. It has no smell, although it will normally have an odour added for commercial applications to help detect leaks.
- LPG is supplied in pressurised cylinders to keep it liquefied. The cylinders are strong and not easily damaged, although the valve at the top can be vulnerable to impact. Leaks can occur from valves and pipe connections, most likely as a gas.
- Owing to its rapid vaporisation and consequent lowering of temperature, LPG, particularly liquid, can cause severe frost burns if brought into contact with the skin. Personal protective equipment (e.g. hand and eye protection) should be worn when handling.
