Pressure Cleaning - Using Steam Information:

The Pressure Cleaning - Using Steam Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 13 page procedure outlining the safety steps for using petrol/diesel operated high pressures cleaners – including steam. This SWMS includes working from a cherry picker/working at heights and use of cleaning chemicals (such as paint strippers, degreasers, chlorine hydrochloric acid and caustic soda).

The Pressure Cleaning – Using Steam procedure is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System.

The Pressure Cleaning - Using Steam procedure can be used as part of your OHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications.

Planning:

Conduct risk assessment to determine whether spraying is appropriate. Consider:

  • Material safety data sheet (MSDS) (for chemicals).
  • Traffic management requirements/pedestrian access
  • How over-spray will be contained
  • Weather conditions
  • Duration of task
  • Near-by property (cars, buildings, homes etc)
  • Near-by ignition sources/electrical sources
  • Near-by persons (employees/pedestrians)
  • Type of respiratory protective equipment required
  • Material to be sprayed (no asbestos-containing material, glass or other fragile surfaces)
  • Work at heights
  • EPA requirements/restrictions
  • Occupational exposure limits

Establish Spray Area:

  • Provide signs/barriers to designate spray area
  • Ensure area is large enough to protect persons/property from exposure to overspray
  • Restrict entry
  • Isolate ignition sources at least 6m from cleaner (including light switches, motors, smoking, Class 3 dangerous goods, hot works etc)
  • Provide screening where possible
  • Use noise reducing nozzle (silencer)

Lift unit by handles using mechanical aids, or team lift.

For outdoor use only (carbon monoxide build-up)
