Sandblasting Information:
The Sandblasting Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 12 page procedure outlining the safety steps for using Dry Air Powered Abrasive Blasting (Sandblasting) equipment. This SWMS outlines prohibited blasting media which includes silica sand, river, beach or other white sands (containing more than 1-2% crystalline silica).
The Sandblasting procedure is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System.
The Sandblasting procedure can be used as part of your OHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications.

Planning:
- Assess size of object to be blasted
- For small work pieces – use Blasting cabinet
- For larger pieces – use Blasting chamber/room
- For very large pieces (bigger than 2.5m x 2.5m x 3m) provide temporary enclosure and/or exclusion zone
Use suitable blast media:
- garnet
- crushed or bead glass
- metal shot, steel grift
- aluminium oxide
- granulated plastics
- some metal slag (avoid possible toxins such as chromium or lead)
Obtain MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for blasting media, solvents, finishing sprays etc.
