Trench Collapse Information:

The Trench Collapse Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 8 page procedure. This SWMS covers general emergency procedures in the event of a trench collapse.

All precautions must be taken to ensure that a trench collapse will not occur. Always ensure area is made safe for rescue personnel. Trench collapses can occur from unstable soil and inadequate shoring. It is important to note that any rescue action may act to disrupt the temporary stability of the trench and cause further collapse.

The Trench Collapse Work Method Statement (WMS) is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System.

The Trench Collapse Work Method Statement can be used as part of your OHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications.

Planning Emergency response:

Assess incident site:

  • Degree of collapse/size of trench and collapsed area
  • Type of soil, condition and type of compaction
  • Number of persons trapped (if any)
  • Severity of injuries, possible fatalities
  • Risks to rescue personnel (gas leaks, live electrical cables, unsafe atmosphere, unstable ground, unsafe access/egress, water, etc)
  • Rescue equipment required (eg: ladders, ropes, shovels, communication devices, medical treatment requirements, victim transport equipment etc)

Assign responsibilities for the following:

  • Contacting Emergency Services as required
  • Making area safe:
    • Remove all non-essential persons at least 150m from collapse site (provide barricades)
    • Ensure non-active rescue personnel remain 50m from collapsed area
    • Control traffic to area – ensure no vehicles, or heavy machinery in operation at least 300m from site in all directions.
  • Gathering witnesses to determine what happened
