Vinyl Flooring - laying Information:
The Vinyl Flooring - Laying Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 16 page procedure outlining the safety steps for the laying of vinyl flooring including vinyl welding and chemical sealing.
The Vinyl Flooring - Laying Work Method Statement (WMS) is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall WHS System.
This SWMS covers installation of vinyl flooring in new premises.
Operation: (extract only)
Seal as per manufacturer’s instructions. Example:
- Ensure joins are clean and dry
- Ensure no ignition sources present.
- Ensure adequate ventilation and PPE
- For chemical sealing:
- Start at one end and insert applicator tip into seam. Apply in a continuous seam.
- Use caution to prevent sealer contacting other parts of vinyl.
- Clean tools/equipment with approved thinners
- For welding seams:
- Vacuum to remove dust/fibres and ensure vinyl clean and free of oils/grease.
- Ensure any adhesive previously applied is set (ensure compatible adhesives for weld temperatures)
- Ensure weld gun clean and attachment free of debris
- Remove non-essential persons/materials from area
- Cut rod/cord to size and insert into welder as per manufacturer’s instructions
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions for operation of specific welder/gun
- Pre-heat welder to required setting (as per manufacturer’s instructions and vinyl properties) Adjust heat, pressure, and speed as per manufacturer’s instructions and weld quality directions
- Conduct test weld. If seal is ok – continue with sealing process.
- Ensure electrical leads, hands, fingers or body parts are not in path of welder nozzle
- Ensure constant movement of welder at desired speed. Too slow will burn vinyl, too fast will not enable seal
- Inspect seals when complete
- Do not allow fingers/hands to contact rod, heating tube, nozzle or heated seal
- Ensure adequate ventilation. Seek advice for PPE if ventilation limited
- Do not leave welder unattended when powered or when hot.
- When works completed, isolate power to welder and position to allow tube/nozzle to cool. Ensure persons do not approach welder during cool down.
- Ensure all excess cord is trimmed using quarter moon knife/trim guide as required. Trim cord until a smooth, even finish is obtained.
