Welding- Oxyacetylene Information:
The Welding- Oxyacetylene Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 15 page procedure. This SWMS includes welding/cutting tasks undertaken using oxy-acetylene cylinders.
The Welding- Oxyacetylene procedure is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System.
The Welding- Oxyacetylene Work Method Statement can be used as part of your OHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications.
Planning:
Store minimum quantities required. Use the smallest size cylinders as appropriate.
Obtain current Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS – issue date within 5 years) and ensure these are accessible.
Add quantities to Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Substances register. Conduct risk assessments as required and ensure legislation requirements met for placarding, manifest and fire protection quantities.
Ensure appropriate storage of cylinders:
- Well ventilated area in a secured location (such as an exterior locked cage, protected from direct sunlight, made from non-combustible materials - metal).
- Oxygen cylinders stored at least 3m from fuel gas cylinders (unless separated by 4 hour minimum fire-rated wall). *This does not apply for cylinders in use
- Stored upright and secured so cylinders cannot fall over. DO NOT store empty cylinders upside-down.
- Provide signage. Example: "Danger. No smoking, No ignition sources". "Restricted Access"
- Other classes of dangerous goods stored separately
- Adequate fire protection
- No ignition sources within 6m
Note: Ignition sources include pilot lights, stoves, heaters, cigarettes, matches/lighters, grinding, welding, power-points, lighting, light switches, radio transmitters, mobile phones, battery powered forklifts etc
