Noise Control Information:
The Noise Control Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 11 page procedure.
Long-term exposure to noise is the most common preventable cause of hearing loss. The extent of hearing loss depends on the duration of exposure and the intensity of the sound the worker is exposed to. The Australian National Standard for exposure to noise at work is an average daily (8 hour equivalent) exposure level of 85dB with a peak noise level no greater than 140dB at any time during the day.
The Noise Control procedure is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System.
The Noise Control Work Method Statement can be used as part of your OHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications.
Planning
Determine whether employees are exposed to hazardous noise levels (above 85 dBA, or 140 peak).
Note: Examples of noise output:
- 85dB = Front End Loader
- 140dB = Gun shot
Employees can be exposed to 85dBA over an 8hour shift. For every 3 decibels increase, divide the hours of acceptable exposure by half.
Example:
- 88dB = 4 hours exposure.

Grinder operating at 121dB = 7.5 seconds.
For 2 machines running at same decibel output, add 3 decibels. Example:

Two plant running at 88 decibel each, = 91db.
2 hours is acceptable exposure time.
