The Pipework – Maintenance – Hazardous Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive procedure outlining the safety steps for the minor maintenance of pipework that have contained hazardous chemicals.

The Pipework – Maintenance - Hazardous Work Method Statement (WMS) is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall WHS System.

This SWMS involves maintenance works being undertaken on UPVC pipes where chemicals (such as sodium hypochlorite) are present. This SWMS does not cover excavation works, working in a confined space and/or a trench in sufficient detail and should be used in conjunction with applicable SafetyCulture SWMS. Ensure dedicated SWMS are implemented for hazards not covered in this SWMS.

Remember: The content of the SWMS should be refined over time and include consultation with workers and other persons conducting a business or undertaking. Prior to each new activity, the SWMS must be reviewed and revised to ensure it applies to the high risk construction work and the actual site you are working at.

Planning: (extract only)

Ensure a safe system of work in place for chemical piping. Example:

  • All pipework are labelled for the type of substance (chemical name, biological contaminant etc)
  • Correct flow velocity and pressure
  • Regular inspections of pipe integrity
  • Regular inspections of pipe interiors to prevent build-up / concentrations of hazardous substances and / or pressure
  • Joins are the correct type of substance being piped (example: no threaded joins. If threaded joins must be used, they must have been installed new, sharp, secured correctly and caustic-resistant
  • All piping installed by competent persons and meets required design specifications

Ensure correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for tasks. Seek information from Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and competent persons. PPE must be suitable for level of exposure.
