All workers have the right to work in an environment that is free from violence and aggressive behaviour.
Where clients/customers/public are involved workplace violence can present itself and can include verbal abuse, physical violence or threats. Violence can present itself for many reasons including malicious intent, poor service provision and inadequate design of the environment.
Workplace violence is not limited to incidents that occur within a traditional workplace. Work-related violence can also occur at off-site business-related functions, at social events related to work, or on the road between jobs. The objective of this policy is to assist in reducing the threat and managing any incident relating to harm caused by violent and aggressive behaviour at work, whilst providing a mechanism to assess, analyse and implement an effective management process to prevent workplace violence.
In particular, those at the greatest risk are support workers, carers, health care providers and teachers who work with clients with a varying range of needs and disabilities. Aggressive or violent client-related behaviour can present itself, posing a risk for carers and clients.
This module outlines the responsibilities of persons involved including the Employer/PCBU, Health and Safety Representative, Managers/Supervisors and staff, as well as providing a procedure on the actions that must be taken in the instance of violent, threatening, harassing, or intimidating behaviour in the workplace both verbally and physically.
The policy can be used as a stand-alone document or incorporated into your existing OHS Management System.
