Roadside Tyre Change Safe Operating Procedure

This Roadside Tyre Change Safe Operating Procedure (SOP) provides a way for your business to outline step-by-step safe processes when conducting a roadside tyre change.

  • Provides instructions on the use of the equipment both prior to and during operation.
  • Ensures workers recognise and manage associated hazards and risks involved.
  • Provides a training document for workers. 

Procedure

  1. Remove the hubcap.
  2. Using the wheel brace, loosen the wheel nuts but do not remove them.
  3. Place the jack under the car in the approved jacking location (see vehicle operating manual)
  4. Raise the vehicle until the wheel is approximately 100mm off the ground
  5. Ensure the vehicle remains stable. Do not put any part of your body under the vehicle!
  6. Unscrew the wheel nuts completely and remove.
  7. Remove the flat tyre by pulling towards you
  8. Place the flat tyre under the vehicle as a secondary safety precaution until the new tyre is fitted
  9. Retrieve spare wheel and place in front of wheel hub
  10. Align the spare with the wheel bolts. Lift and push into place
  11. Replace wheel nuts and tighten as much as possible by hand in a star pattern
  12. Lower the vehicle and remove Jack
  13. Tighten wheel nuts fully
