This Bogged Vehicle Recovery Safe Operating Procedure (SOP) provides a way for your business to outline step-by-step safe processes when conducting a bogged vehicle recovery.

  • Provides instructions on the use of the equipment both prior to and during operation.
  • Ensures workers recognise and manage associated hazards and risks involved.
  • Provides a training document for workers. 

SOP Procedure:

  1. DO NOT exceed the SWL of recovery equipment
  2. Nominate one person to be in charge of the recovery
  3. Keep engine running where possible
  4. Try deflating the tires to about half the normal pressure
  5. Align tow vehicles as much as possible
  6. Attach snatch straps using designated rated recovery points only.
  7. Ensure all persons not in vehicles are clear of the area, at least 50m away
  8. Drape a heavy bag or other dampening device (e.g. floor mat) over strap prior to operation
  9. The tow vehicle should accelerate with firm and controlled momentum
  10. Take care not to run over the strap and stop somewhere safe
  11. Remember to re-inflate your tires after extraction
