The Manual Handling-lifting Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive document outlining the safety steps, main hazards, risks and controls associated with Manual handling includes all physical activity. Manual handling tasks only present a risk when they are considered hazardous. Hazardous manual tasks can lead to injuries that are called “Musculoskeletal Injuries” or MSD’s.
The SWMS covers the requirement to identify, assess and control manual handling risks in relation to lifting tasks across numerous industries including construction, manufacturing, hospitality etc. This does not provide specific risk controls in relation to people-handling in health care settings.
Remember: The content of the SWMS should be refined over time and include consultation with workers and other persons conducting a business or undertaking. Prior to each new activity, the SWMS must be reviewed and revised to ensure it applies to the high risk construction work and the actual site you are working at.
