This Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive document outlining the safety steps, main hazards, risks and controls associated with basic tree felling. This SWMS does not cover advanced tree felling activities –such as working at heights, using winches, using dozers, back pulling, tree driving, dangerous trees or working in windthrow in sufficient detail. (In forestry, windthrow refers to trees uprooted or broken by wind. Breakage of the tree bole (trunk) instead of uprooting is sometimes called windsnap). Dedicated SWMS should be developed for these tasks, and for any risks not covered in this SWMS. This SWMS should be used in conjunction with Chainsaw SWMS.
Remember: The content of the SWMS should be refined over time and include consultation with workers and other persons conducting a business or undertaking. Prior to each new activity, the SWMS must be reviewed and revised to ensure it applies to the high risk construction work and the actual site you are working at.
